CALAMBA CITY, Laguna — As a country experiences a rise in dengue cases, blood supplies have become depleted. Sensing this, a group of concerned citizens in Calamba City, Laguna participated in blood donation activity last March 15, 2025. The donations collected over 100 blood bags and were expected to assist hospitals, including the partner hospital of the event, the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC), in treating patients.
Among the blood donors was Jofel Domingo, a former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW), who shared how blood donations became crucial when his wife required urgent blood transfusions. “My wife had severe bleeding, and I was able to secure five bags of blood from the blood bank at New Era [General Hospital in Quezon City],” he shared.
Emelita Pusing also shared her personal experience, when her cousin’s accident led to a desperate search for blood donors. “My cousin was in an accident a few years ago and was hospitalized. He needed blood, and it was really difficult for us to find donors at that time. Eventually, we were able to find people who donated blood. That’s when we realized how important these initiatives are. Through this, we’re able to help, so others don’t have to go through the same difficulty we experienced,” she said.
Hospitals, like PCMC, continue to face a high demand for blood donations. According to Jewel German, a medical technologist at PCMC, “Every day, it seems like at least 10 kids are in line, and it’s not just one unit they’re requesting; some need six units. Of course, those six units come from six different donors.” she said. “The partnership of Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) with PCMC has been such a big help. Especially during weekends, we really rely on INC to provide. And it’s not just for one group; it truly benefits everyone. So, thank you to all the donors today, we reached over 100 [bags] which is a huge help. You might think you’re only helping one person, but with just one bag of blood, you can save up to three kids,” she added.
For Terodorico Nemedes, an INC member, helping others is a way of living out his faith. “We donate blood as part of our Christian duty to help others, regardless of whether we know them personally,” he said.
Through these blood donation efforts, these people show their commitment to serving those in need, thus strengthening the community.
Iglesia Ni Cristo is a Christian religion and community partner that helps. It has active members and congregations in more than 160 countries and territories.
