“The rains were so intense. The flood caught us by surprise. It was terrible. Our house was almost wiped-out. But we thank the Lord God for protecting our lives. We are still able to go on with our duties,” recalled Corazon Lacorte, a deaconess in the Local Congregation of Mambaroto.

Severe weather recently battered Negros Occidental, Philippines, due to Tropical Depression Gener, enhanced by the southwest monsoon (Habagat). In Mambaroto, the rains caused the Sipalay River to overflow thus flooding the surrounding communities. The Ilog-Hilabangan River also swelled, which flooded towns including Candoni.

In response,  the Ecclesiastical District of Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental held a Care For Humanity event at Mambaroto village in Sipalay City, and the municipality of Candoni on October 12, 2024. More than 500 residents, Iglesia Ni Cristo members and nonmembers alike, benefited.

Brother Amando Bariring Jr., district supervising minister, led the humanitarian effort along with the district leadership.

“We are grateful to the Church Administration for always remembering our welfare especially in times of calamities. They truly care for us. In times of hardships, they make sure we are able to remain resolute,” said resident ministerial worker Brother Jay-Vie Camali-an, on behalf of the Mambaroto Congregation. — With assistance from Credenda Balceda
