SAN MARIANO, Isabela — More than 300 tree saplings were planted by Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ or INC) members in Isabela during a tree planting activity conducted in the town of San Mariano on January 18, 2025.
“We planted 250 forest trees and 100 fruit-bearing trees today. We planted Mahogany, Gmelina, Molave, Rambutan, Mango, and Guapple,” said Jonel Llamelo, an INC ministerial worker in San Mariano.
According to various environmental groups, tree planting can help address the impact of climate change.
Amalia Culili, the municipal agriculturist of San Mariano, noted that climate change has caused severe challenges for local farmers, particularly those in the upland areas.
“Due to climate change, most of our farmers, especially those in the upland areas, are severely affected. When there is no rain for [one to two weeks], the soil dries up very quickly. This leads to a decline in the production of our farmers,” she explained.
The situation highlights the growing concern over how the changing weather patterns are directly harming agricultural productivity. Extended periods of drought leave farmers struggling to maintain crop yields, which ultimately affects their income and food security.
Culili thanked the INC and its members for their support and acknowledged the significance of their contribution to the environment and the community. “We are extremely grateful to the Iglesia Ni Cristo because we have programs like this tree planting activity. It is not only a great help to us but especially [also] to the community where we live,” she said.
The Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church Of Christ) is a Christian religion in more than 165 countries and territories. It is composed of members from more than 150 different ethnicities and nationalities.
