The Ecclesiastical District of British Columbia held the finals of the Songs of Salvation (Himig ng Kaligtasan) choral competition at the Scottish Cultural Centre, Vancouver, Canada on August 25, 2024.

This year’s competition had the participants render a cappella performances of the Church’s original music. The criteria for the winner selection were originality, musicality, voice quality, and stage presentation. The judges were New Westminster assistant choir directress Jennifer De Leon, Victoria choir member Venice Sarmiento, Burnaby district music team secretary and deaconess Meriam Dela Cruz, and Chilliwack GWS deacon Bryan Calibo.

The choir from the Local Congregation of New Westminster who sang ‘Still Blessed by God’ won; the Local Congregation of Richmond’s choir, first runner-up, with their rendition of the same piece; and that of the Local Congregation of Surrey, second-runner up, with their performance of ‘In Our New Home.’ They were awarded certificates for their performances.

One of the performers from New Westminster, Chantelle Jusay said, “Music is a very special way to convey a certain emotion or message to our fellowmen. I’m so glad that through music, I’m able to proclaim God’s will written in the Bible.”

“I think the significance of these events is that through our God-given talents, we are able to convey God’s will. I’m so glad to see my brethren put effort for such activities of the Church,” said Jedd Sobrepeña from Surrey.
